SMART PRIME HIGH BUILD PRIMER TOUCH-UP PEN Technical Product Description Smart Prime High Build Primer Touch-Up Pen is a convenient, precision-application primer designed for the localised repair and preparation of small areas where the original coating or protective finish has been damaged, removed, scratched or exposed. The high-build formulation is designed to provide effective coverage and film build in a controlled, easy-to-apply format. The pen applicator allows the user to apply primer accurately to small defects without the need for conventional brushes, spray equipment or large quantities of coating material.

Surface Preparation
Correct surface preparation is essential for achieving good adhesion and a durable repair.
Do not apply over loose, contaminated, wet or unstable surfaces.
Directions for Use
1. Prepare the Pen
Before use, ensure that the pen is at the recommended application temperature and that the cap is securely fitted.
Shake or mix the product as directed on the product label. Where applicable, ensure the internal applicator is properly charged with primer before beginning application.
Important: The exact activation procedure may vary according to the pen design. Follow the instructions supplied with the specific product.
2. Test the Applicator
Before applying to the repair area, test the pen on a suitable non-critical surface or test area.
Check that the primer flows correctly and that the applicator delivers a consistent film.
3. Apply the Primer
Apply the primer directly to the prepared damaged area using controlled strokes.
For scratches and narrow defects, follow the length of the damaged area while keeping the application confined to the repair zone.
For chips or small exposed areas, apply sufficient primer to cover the exposed substrate and achieve the required film build.
Avoid flooding the surrounding intact coating.
4. Build the Film Gradually
Because the product is a high-build primer, apply the required film thickness in controlled applications rather than applying an excessively thick layer in a single pass.
Allow each coat to dry sufficiently before applying an additional coat, where required.
The number of coats required will depend on:
5. Allow to Dry
Allow the primer to dry and/or cure in accordance with the manufacturer’s specified drying and recoat times.
Do not apply the topcoat until the primer has reached the required condition for overcoating.
Low temperatures, high humidity, excessive film thickness and poor ventilation may increase drying or curing time.
6. Smooth the Repair if Required
Where a smooth, blended finish is required, allow the primer to fully cure before lightly abrading the repaired area with a suitable grade of abrasive.
Remove all sanding dust before applying the finishing coat.
Avoid sanding through the primer and exposing the substrate again.
7. Apply Compatible Topcoat
Once the primer is suitably dry/cured and the surface has been prepared, apply a compatible topcoat according to the topcoat manufacturer’s instructions.
For best results, ensure compatibility between:
Substrate → Existing coating → Smart Prime primer → Topcoat
Where compatibility is uncertain, perform a small test application before proceeding with the full repair.
Application Conditions
For optimum application and drying performance:
The actual drying and curing rate will vary according to temperature, humidity, airflow, substrate temperature and applied film thickness.
Important Application Notes
The high-build nature of Smart Prime is intended to provide additional film thickness over localised defects. However, excessive application can result in prolonged drying, sagging, solvent retention, uneven texture or difficulties during subsequent finishing.
Apply only the quantity required to achieve the specified protective and preparatory film.
For larger areas of damage, extensive corrosion, structural damage or applications requiring a specified coating thickness, a conventional primer application system may be more appropriate than a touch-up pen.
Cleaning and Storage
Immediately after use, clean the applicator or close the pen as instructed by the manufacturer.
Replace the cap securely to prevent drying or contamination of the applicator.
Store the product in its original container, tightly closed, in a cool, dry and well-ventilated location away from direct sunlight, excessive heat and sources of ignition where applicable.
Do not allow the product to freeze unless the product specification specifically permits it.
Keep away from children and store in accordance with the applicable Safety Data Sheet (SDS).
Health, Safety and Environmental Information
Read the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and product label before use.
Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including suitable gloves and eye protection where required.
Avoid unnecessary contact with skin and eyes and avoid breathing vapour, mist or dust generated during preparation or application.
Ensure adequate ventilation during use.
When sanding cured primer, appropriate respiratory protection and dust-control measures should be used where required by the risk assessment.
Dispose of unused product, contaminated materials and empty packaging in accordance with local regulations and applicable waste-disposal requirements.
